USDT is the coin people move between exchanges more than any other — and the withdrawal fee depends almost entirely on which network you pick, not which exchange you use. The same 1,000 USDT can cost a fraction of a cent to move on one chain and several dollars on another.

How to choose the network

Match the receiving side first. Cheapest is irrelevant if the destination doesn’t accept that network. Check the deposit page of the receiving exchange or the wallet’s supported chains before you copy an address.
Then pick the cheap rail. When both sides support several networks, Tron, Solana and exchange-owned chains are almost always the cheapest; ERC20 is worth paying for only when the destination is Ethereum-only (DeFi protocols, some custodians).
Mind the minimum. Expensive networks usually carry high minimum withdrawals too. For small amounts, a cheap network is often the only route that makes sense at all.
Send a test amount for a first-time route. On a cheap network a test transfer costs almost nothing — cheap insurance against a mismatched network or a wrong address.

Why are ERC20 USDT withdrawals usually the most expensive?

An ERC20 transfer settles on Ethereum mainnet, where gas is priced in ETH and every token transfer competes for block space, so exchanges historically charged far more for it. When gas is low the medians converge — right now $1.35 on Ethereum versus $1.50 on Tron across the exchanges we track — but individual exchanges still differ many-fold on the same network, so your exchange's actual fee matters more than the network rule of thumb.

Do both sides need to support the same network?

Yes — the network is the rail the tokens actually move on. If you withdraw USDT as TRC20, the receiving wallet or exchange must accept USDT on Tron; sending to an ERC20-only address on the wrong network can lose the funds. Always match the network on both the sending and receiving side before confirming.
