How to Buy Crypto
Which of the 76 exchanges we track lists the coin you want, what the buy costs, and what it costs to take the coin with you afterwards.
Buying crypto is four decisions, and only one of them is the exchange you have heard of. Pick a venue that actually lists the coin — most do not: the 76 exchanges here range from 9,475 assets down to a few dozen. Fund the account in the way that costs least rather than the way that is quickest. Place the order knowing the difference between the maker and taker fee. Then, if you are holding rather than trading, get the coin out — which is a flat fee per coin that has nothing to do with the size of your purchase, and is the number most comparisons leave out.
Where you can buy, and how many coins each lists
The coins column is counted from our own sync of each exchange’s deposit and withdrawal endpoints — every asset the exchange itself says it will accept or send. It is not the number CoinMarketCap prints on an exchange profile, and the two are usually far apart (MEXC: 9,475). Sort by any column to reorder the table.

Paying by card, bank transfer or P2P
27 of these exchanges take a debit or credit card, 15 take a bank transfer, and 14 run a P2P desk where you pay another user directly. The trading fee in the table is not what you pay on a card purchase: card rails add their own charge on top, typically 1.8–4%, and it is applied before the trading fee is even calculated. A bank transfer is slower and much cheaper. Cheapest of all is to deposit a stablecoin you already hold — a crypto deposit is free on almost every exchange here — and buy with that. If a coin is only listed on an exchange with no fiat rails at all, that is the route you will end up taking anyway: buy USDT somewhere with card support, withdraw it, and trade from there.
Maker, taker, and what a $1,000 buy really costs
A market order takes liquidity off the book and pays the taker fee; a limit order that rests on the book pays the lower maker fee when it fills. The gap is often half the cost of the trade, though the base rate itself is small — Ourbit charges $0.00 on a $1,000 market buy. What is not small is the withdrawal fee afterwards. It is a fixed amount of the coin, set per network by each exchange, so it stays the same whether you bought $100 or $100,000 — the smaller your purchase, the more it matters. Before you send the first order
- Check the coin is listed on the venue for the network you intend to use — a token on the wrong network is usually unrecoverable. The networks page shows which chains each coin moves over.
- Check withdrawals are open. Exchanges pause them per coin during maintenance and network upgrades, and a paused withdrawal is flagged in every table here.
- Compare the fee to move the coin out before you buy, not after — see withdrawal fees by coin.
- Decide where the coin will live. An exchange balance is custodial; a self-custody wallet is not. Both are legitimate choices, and only one of them charges you to move.
- Send a small test amount the first time you withdraw to a new address.

How do I find out which exchange sells the coin I want?
Start from the coin, not the exchange. Every coin on this site has a "how to buy" page listing each of the 76 exchanges we track that actually accepts deposits and withdrawals for it, with the trading fee and the withdrawal fee side by side. The table on this page is the other direction: it shows how many different coins each exchange lists in total, from MEXC at 9,475 down. Small-cap tokens usually only exist on a handful of venues, so the coin decides the exchange more often than the other way round.
How many coins does each exchange really list?
The "coins listed" column is counted from our own sync of each exchange's deposit and withdrawal endpoints — every asset the exchange itself says it will accept or send, 54,485 of them across 76 exchanges. It is not the coin count shown on CoinMarketCap or on an exchange's marketing page, which typically counts trading pairs or only the assets that have a market-cap listing. That is why the numbers here are often much larger — MEXC shows 9,475 assets by this measure.
Can I buy crypto with a credit or debit card?
Yes — 27 of the 76 exchanges in the table accept a card, and 15 accept a bank transfer, while 14 run a P2P desk where you pay another user directly. Card is the fastest and almost always the most expensive: the card processor's fee sits on top of the trading fee in the table, usually somewhere between 1.8% and 4%. A bank transfer takes longer and normally costs a fraction of that, and on many exchanges depositing stablecoins costs nothing at all.
What does it actually cost to buy $1,000 of crypto?
The trading fee alone is small — at Ourbit the base taker fee works out to $0.00 on a $1,000 market buy. Two other costs usually dwarf it: the funding fee if you pay by card, and the withdrawal fee when you move the coin off the exchange, which is a flat amount of that coin and has nothing to do with how much you bought. That is why buying $100 on a cheap-to-trade exchange with an expensive withdrawal fee can cost more than buying it somewhere with a higher trading fee. Every coin page here adds the two together.
Do I need to move crypto off the exchange after buying?
Not necessarily, and for active trading it makes no sense to. The trade-off is custody: while the coin sits on an exchange, the exchange holds the keys, and your balance depends on it staying solvent and keeping withdrawals open. If you are buying to hold, moving it to a wallet you control is the point at which the withdrawal fee gets charged — so it is worth checking that number before you pick where to buy, not after.
Is the order of this table paid for?
Partly, and it is labelled. Exchanges we have a referral arrangement with are shown first and carry a Referral tag; everything after them is ordered by the number of coins listed. No fee, coin count or verdict in any row is affected by that — those come from the exchange's own published schedule — and clicking any column header re-sorts the whole table on the data alone.
